How to Use This Calculator

This calculator provides a rough estimate for traditional stick-framed sheds built on skids. It assumes:

  • Floor System: Pressure treated skids and joists spaced 16" on center, topped with 3/4" plywood.
  • Wall Framing: Studs spaced 16" on center with double top plates.
  • Roof System: Rafters or trusses spaced 24" on center with 1/2" OSB decking and architectural shingles.
Every shed is slightly different. If you add multiple windows, wide double doors, or a loft, you will need to adjust these material quantities slightly. For the absolute exact materials list down to the last screw, you're better off working from professional shed plans.

Wood Quality Matters

When you take this list to the lumber yard, remember that not all wood is created equal. Using untreated wood for your foundation skids is one of the most common shed foundation mistakes. Make sure all ground-contact wood is properly pressure treated.

Minimizing Waste

Lumber isn't cheap. The standard dimensions in this calculator (8x10, 10x12, etc.) are optimized for 4x8 sheet goods to minimize waste. If you choose a custom size like 9x11, expect to have a lot of offcuts. Read our principles for zero-waste shed building before finalizing your dimensions.
