Pro Builder Tip: Go One Size Up

You will always fill the space you have. Upgrading to a 8x10 Standard Shed only adds about 15-20% to the material cost, but gives you 32 more square feet.

The Golden Rule of Shed Sizing

Ask any seasoned builder and they'll tell you the same thing: "Build it bigger than you think you need."

It is the most common regret among DIYers. You measure your current equipment, build a shed exactly that size, and two years later you buy a snowblower or a table saw. Now your shed is cluttered and unusable.

The 25% Rule: Calculate your exact required square footage, add walkway space, and then add another 25% for future expansion. It is much cheaper to add 2 feet of length during the initial build than to build a second shed later.

How We Calculate Space

This calculator doesn't just add up the physical footprint of your items. If a riding mower takes up 35 square feet, you can't just put it in a 35 square foot shed. You need room to walk around it, open the doors, and pull it out without scratching it.

Our algorithm automatically adds a 40% allowance for walkways and maneuvering. This ensures your recommended size is actually usable in the real world.
